We understand on top of experience and training, there are also certain qualities a person must possess to be a good security officer.
These are essential traits that a person must possess to be a good security officer.
1. Observation
You’ve heard of “observe and report” as a security officers’ sole duty. It is true that in most security situations an officer’s most important responsibility is to observe and report. Observation is a significant trait to possess as a security officer. Being vigilant of suspicious activity on the premises of a company is the number one factor a security officer is hired to do. Being focused and alert all times is key to observing and reporting. Excellent attention to details is a skill that can be learned by staying observant of all surroundings and activity. Excellent observation skills help make a security officer a good security officer.
2. Customer Service
In most business scenarios, security is the first point of contact. A security officer is representing the company by being the first person that a customer or a business partner sees. Therefore, it is helpful that security officers present themselves in a professional manner. In most settings, security officers provide an exclusive level of customer service to help create an environment that is safe, engaging and inviting. Great customer service is also essential for security personnel when communicating with emergency services, resolving issues at work, and communicating with company dispatch. Many issues or events that arise can possibly be deescalated with great customer service from a security officer onsite.
3. Teamwork
It is apparent that a security company, is one team. Even if there are scenarios where there are lone officers on patrol or on a site, all security officers work together as a whole team to get the job done right. Teamwork is critical for security officers to provide effective and professional security services. Teamwork from security officers is also essential when working with public services such as firefighters, police officers, or medical staff.
4. Leadership
A good security officer must have strong leadership skills. Having strong leadership skills while working in a team is complimentary to each other, leadership, and teamwork as every team needs a leader who will manage it. Strong leadership skills are vital for crowd control and any kind of emergency where security officers need to guide people through a dangerous situation.
5. Keep your cool
During emergencies, it is a natural reaction for humans to panic. That is why it is important for a security officer to remain calm during an emergency. Security officers are trained to be prepared for the worst scenarios while on duty. An officer’s goal is to de-escalate any tense situation and prevent potential threats. It is important for an officer to remain calm and keep a cool head, no matter the issue.
6. Do not take it personal
Daily, security officers must interact with diverse types of people. The purpose of having security in all cases is to deter unwanted and or illegal activities. Therefore, security officers will occasionally encounter and Interact with individuals committing unwanted and/or illegal activity. Such interactions may provoke certain individuals to direct insults towards security officers. However, no matter what happens, a peacemaking attitude is expected from an officer in every situation. They must be able to work under pressure and should put safety first and above all, security officers should not take things too personal.
Even with excellent training we believe that what makes a good officer is someone who has these listed traits. Having these essential traits help make a security officer a good security officer. What are your thoughts?

Together we can get through this…
2020 has been a tough year for us all so far. All of us have been affected in many different ways. From staying home from work, to having the kids home from school, it’s hit us all. It becomes surreal when we step out of our homes and have to wear a face mask while in public like were back in the influenza pandemic of 1918. We get that it’s necessary but completely uncomfortable.
How do we keep our glasses from fogging up?
How do we breath comfortably while wearing them?
It also is surreal when you think, The Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020 will go down in history. You have to admit, that’s kind of embarrassing.
It’s safe to say, we’ve all been impacted in many different ways. However, The impact on the elderly has been significant. Many elderly have been quarantined at home with limited sources for food and regular household supplies.
It’s beautiful to see how communities are coming together to help one another. People are making connections with Drive & Wave Parades, to visiting loved ones through glass doors, to dropping off meals and supplies, and Zoom family meetings.
There are so many ways to help. At Star Pro Security Patrol Inc, we do what we can to make an impact. Together we can get through this.
